Built in the fourteenth century, and destroyed in the nineteenth, the castle was restored in 1960. The inside of the castle is converted into a museum about the history of the castle itself and the warrior class. It is possible to climb up to the top floor of the castle and enjoy the scenery below. The castle also has a park, complete with a teahouse for traditional tea ceremonies.

After the fall of the shogunate in the Meiji Restoration period, groups resisting the new system prevailed. One of these groups were the Byakkotai, a group of twenty young men. Believing that their cause was lost and their stronghold defeated, they committed ritual suicide on Iimoriyama. The site has ever since became a popular touristic spot, where you cannot only find souvenir shops, but museums about the Byakkotai as well.

Drive along these roads and admire the beautiful mountainous scenery. These lines show off the best features of the Bandai area, providing a breathtaking source material for photographers. There is always something more to discover about the gorgeous Urabandai landscape. Let yourself be impressed over and over again!

Ouchijuku used to be a post town in the Edo period, acting as a rest stop for travelers. Even today, the landscape of the town looks the same as it used to look during the Tokugawa shogunate. You can find many shops, restaurants, and inns on the road, as well as a shrine and a temple. There is also a museum that shows the interior of a traditional Edo period inn. Entering this town feels like a time slip back into the Edo period, and it is a must-see for visitors who are interested in Japanese history and culture!

Kitakata is famous for its traditional Japanese storehouses that were converted into all sorts of shops and inns. The city is also abundantly packed with ramen shops, a must-try for the lovers of Japanese food! Boasting a long history of producing lacquerware as well, visitors can learn more about this craft in the Aizu Lacquer Art Museum. A very versatile town, beloved by foodies as well as those interested in the arts.

The Tadami Line is a railway line, famous for the many scenic spots it crosses. It offers an unforgettable sight of the panoramic countryside, attracting both tourists and those interested in photography. Running along many of the touristic spots of the area, it is worth hopping on and enjoying the ride!

The Goshiki-numa lakes formed after the volcanic eruption of Mount Bandai in 1888, leaving behind a gorgeous landscape. Five lakes were created after the eruption, all with their own unique hue. A beautiful scenic spot, the Goshiki-numa is very popular with tourists and photographers who strive to capture the beauty of these lakes.

Founded in 1997, the Morohashi Museum of Modern Art focuses on mainly the artworks of Salvador Dalí. The collection also includes works from artists such as Renoir, Picasso, van Gogh and Chagall. Please note that the museum is closed during the winter period, from the end of October until mid-April.

A memorial hall for Nobel-prize nominated Hideyo Noguchi is located at his birthplace in Fukushima prefecture. You can find out more about Hideyo Noguchi’s life story at the museum, as well as look at some of his belongings at the exhibition. The house itself is Noguchi’s birthplace, where visitors can experience the atmosphere of a typical Meiji-period house and the circumstances Hideyo Noguchi was born into. You can also find a robot replica of Noguchi here, who can engage in conversation with visitors.
